Heartwarming videos circulating online today highlight the power of second chances.

Daffy, an Irish Terrier rescue dog, lost his vision, leaving caregiver Benjamin May and his parents (Daffy’s owners) heartbroken. May noted that Daffy’s decline happened rapidly.

“He went from being a perfectly normal 8-year-old dog to completely blind in about 3-5 months,” May shared on the popular Reddit platform.

“It breaks my heart to see the dog I grew up with—he bumps into things, doesn’t recognize me, and just suffers,” he continued.

At 9 years old, Daffy was diagnosed with canine diabetes, a condition similar to human diabetes where the body can’t properly synthesize insulin, making it difficult to process sugar. There is no known cure for this disease.

Daffy’s owners first suspected diabetes when he began frequently urinating in the house, a common sign of the condition. The worst was confirmed: Daffy’s blood sugar levels were dangerously high. He lost his sight shortly after the diagnosis and faced the prospect of never seeing his loved ones again.

However, Daffy’s devoted family and skilled veterinarians were determined to help. The family diligently administered medication and closely monitored his blood sugar levels. When the situation stabilized, the veterinarians decided to attempt surgery to restore Daffy’s vision.

“Luckily, we managed to keep his levels stable, and the doctors agreed to try the surgery,” May added.

Daffy underwent surgery in January of the previous year, and it was a success. His family captured the emotional moment when the vet removed his bandages, allowing Daffy to see his loved ones again. Overjoyed, Daffy wagged his tail as he greeted his mom and dad. While his vision isn’t perfect, it has significantly improved.

The touching moment quickly went viral, with the video uploaded to YouTube on May 14 garnering over 1.5 million views.

May expressed pride in Daffy’s remarkable recovery since the surgery. “He still has diabetes and needs insulin twice a day, but the eye surgery was successful with no complications or concerns about his vision,” May told The Huffington Post’s Davey.
